Exterior Description And Setting

This skew twin-span bridge (Translink no 439B) was erected by the Belfast & Northern Counties Railway in connection with the opening of an extension platform north of Whitehead Station in 1907. One span crosses the Whitehead-Larne line, and the other the line to the extension platform which lies immediately north-east of the bridge. Prior to this, there was a level crossing at this location. The original spans were metal girders but were replaced with pre-cast reinforced concrete beams in 1986-87. The original pier between the spans was also rebuilt in concrete at the same time. Of the original bridge, only the brick abutments and wing walls survive, the latter coped with rusticated and margined granite blocks. The early 1900s bridge has been altered to such an extent that it is now of no special industrial heritage significance.

This bridge was surveyed in the first survey but not listed and was then demolished before the Second Survey of this area. Hence the partial survey only.
