Exterior Description And Setting

The earlier 19th century road bridge over the Slaughterford watercourse was demolished to make way for the single-track Belfast-Larne railway line, opened by the Carrickfergus & Larne Railway Company in 1862. A replacement bridge (Translink no.440) carried the road over both the stream and railway. It is of random and squared basalt rubble construction with a single segmental span, the soffit of which is of brick. It is embellished with rusticated, margined and vee-jointed quoins on its abutments, buttresses and similar detailing on its arch voussoirs. One of the parapets has been rebuilt and both have been recoped. Angled wing walls retain the ramped road. The stream is conveyed under the west side of the bridge in a semicircular arched culvert. A metal girder footbridge was erected by DOE Roads Service immediately south of the masonry bridge in 2005. Although the bridge is well executed and displays some embellishment, it is similar in these respects to a number of other bridges on this line. It is of local industrial heritage significance.

General Comments

This bridge was recorded in the Fisrt Survey but not listed. It was given a partial record during the Second Survey as not deemd to be of sufficient interest to merit a full survey. It's setting has been compromised by a modern steel footbridge.
