Exterior Description And Setting

This is an attached two-storey house, built c.1884. It is roughly rectangular in plan with a two-storey return to the rear (Southeast). There is a further two-storey extension to the rear (South), built, c. 2000. To the south eastern gable there is a shallow lean-to open car port; this is timber clad. The house is set on the Eastern end of Hanover Square near the junction with Urbal Road. The front North elevation is three bays in width. The ground floor has a door to the centre and two projecting canted bays to each side. Windows are 2/2 timber sliding sash, set on cut-stone sills. The roofs to the canted bays are hipped with natural slate. The doorway to the centre of the ground floor is timber panelled with a rectangular overlight. Window to the first floor are square-headed 2/2 timber sliding sash set on painted cut-stone sills. The side East elevation is gable-ended and has no openings. There is a large brick chimney to the apex of the gable. The side West elevation is adjoining the adjacent terrace. There is a single small square-headed door opening opening to the left of the gable. There is a matching chimney to the apex of the gable. The rear South elevation is partially obscured by the return and extension. There are square-headed timber casement windows to the ground and first floor. External walls are painted render to the front elevation with chamfered quoins to the edges. The side elevations are unpainted. The rear elevation is rubble and snecked stone with brick dressings to windows and edges. The roof is pitched with natural slate. There are two-storey matching chimneys to the roof, one at each gable end. The chimneys are red clay brick with a yellow brick diamond shape to the centre. There is a further yellow brick stringcourse to the bottom and top of the chimney. Rainwater goods appear to be cast-iron. Return: The West elevation has square-headed timber casement windows. There are no further openings visible. External walls are unpainted render to the rear South and side East. The West elevation is rubble and snecked stone with brick dressings to windows and edges. The roof is pitched with natural slate. There is a simple brick chimney to the rear South gable. Extension: There are square-headed timber casement windows to the ground floor and first floor. Walls are unpainted render. There is a lean-to roof with aluminium rainwater goods. Setting: The house is set back from Hanover Square behind a low rendered wall with painted cut-stone capping. It is set near the junction with Urbal Road. There is a small garden to the front and a yard and garden to the rear. Hanover Square largely comprises of two-storey Victorian terraced houses.

Historical Information

This house was built in 1884, by a Hugh Stewart, on a site previously occupied by a pre-1833 low one and a half or two-storey thatched dwelling, which in 1838 is noted as containing a shop. In 1926 the lease was sold to William J. Duff, (a member of the local mill-owning family, whose factory was situated to the south, off Urbal Road), with whose descendant it remains. According to the present owner, William Duff added the bays ‘in 1920’, however, as mentioned above, the valuations only list Mr. Duff as the occupant from 1926. Evaluation

This is a well proportioned an detailed late nineteenth century house. Larger than its surrounding terraced neighbours. Whilst the canted bays were added in the early twentieth century; these do not detract from the character of the house whereas alterations to the rear do detract.. It is one of the more significant buildings in Coagh
