Exterior Description And Setting

This is a two-storey pitched house, built c.1830. It is largely rectangular in plan with a single-storey flat-roofed entrance porch to the front elevation. There is a single-storey pitched addition to the South (left) with a corrugated metal roof. Behind this, there is a further two-storey flat-roofed extensions. The rear of the house faces on to a yard, which is roughly rectangular in shape. There is a further two-storey outbuilding to the rear. Directly adjacent to this outbuilding are two single-storey pitched roof outbuildings to the Southwest. There is a single-storey pitched garage to the Southern boundary. The main house, the metal roof return, and the garage front directly onto Ardcumber Road. There is a gated entrance located between the metal roof return and the garage. The front elevation East fronts directly onto Ardcumber Road. It has square-headed timber sliding sash windows, 6/6 to the ground floor and 3/6 to the first floor. All windows are set on painted cut-stone sills. The projecting entrance porch has a flat roof. It has a square-headed paneled and glazed timber door. The side North elevation has a square-headed timber sliding sash window to the ground floor. The rear West elevation has an assortment of square-headed timber windows. External walls are painted roughcast render to the front elevation and south and plain render to the south side and rear. The roof is pitched and slated. There is a single rendered chimney located slightly off centre. Rainwater goods are replacement aluminum. Returns: The single-storey metal roof addition to the South has two square-headed windows to the front elevation. Windows are 6/6 timber sliding sash. The roof is corrugated metal with a projecting stone verge to the South end. There is a rendered chimney to the gable. The side South gable end is rendered with no openings. The rear West elevation has a large timber casement window and a square-headed timber sheeted door. To the centre there is a flat roofed two storey section; this is surmounted by a large rain water tank. The two-storey flat-roofed return has timber casement windows as previous. It has a projecting parapet to the roof. The garage to the South is single-storey with a large square-headed garage door opening to the road elevation. It has a timber paneled and glazed door. There are two timber casement windows to the side North elevation, and a square-headed timber sheeted door. There are no openings to the South elevation. The roof is pitched with natural slate to the roof. The two-storey outbuilding, possibly a barn, and the single-storey pitched sheds to the Southwest have a mixture of timber casement windows and sheeted timber doors. Both have natural slate pitched roofs. There is an external staircase to the north of the barn. Setting: The house is set directly onto Ardcumber road. There is a small grassy area to the front with a short path leading to the front door. There is a small painted wrought-iron gate to the North of the main house.

Historical Information

A building shown on this site on the OS map of 1833-34, but not noted in the first valuation of 1834 as it was below rateable value. On the revised OS map of 1857 both the house and the rear outbuilding appear, and in the second valuation of the following year, it is recorded as the home of a Francis O’Neill with a John White the immediate lessor. In 1872 White is listed as the occupant and a Charles K. Colhoun the lessor. Three years later James Price became resident, and the house remained with his family until sometime between 1929 and 1935, when it was acquired by a Philip Treanor. It was in the ownership of Mrs. Mary J. Treanor in 1972. It is probable that this house began life as a lower, probably wholly single-storey structure, and, like many vernacular houses within this area, it is likely that the building assumed its present form in the later 1800s or early 1900s. Unfortunately the valuations make no comments on the matter. The style of the window frames could suggest that any change took place at an earlier, rather than a later date- perhaps the 1860s. Evaluation

This is a well proportioned and detailed picturesque road fronted early nineteenth century farmhouse. It has a characteristic elongated linear plan form, which reveals its vernacular origins. As a complete group, with its outbuildings, it is now an increasingly rare example of the type.
