Exterior Description And Setting

A 3 bay wide, 3 storey building, with shopfront, basement, gabled and slated roof. Elevation to High Street, has a modern shopfront with aluminium framed glazed shop door with fanlight and display window. Entrance door to upper floor a 4 panelled framed and moulded door with plain fanlight. Wall finish on each side of shopfront and house door simulated marble building board with plinth. A coloured plastic name fascia extending over shopfront. At 1st floor 3 no. 2 pane double hung sliding sash windows and at 2nd floor 2 panedouble hung sliding sash windows. Painted cills, wall textured rendered in colour. ½ round metal gutter, no downpipe, but 75mm downpipe drains box gutter over shopfront. Natural slated roof and rendered chimney stacks with capping. Gable rises above roof of No 18/20. The building is a mid terrace house observing the general building line.

Historical Information

The terrace of which No. 14/16 High Street is part of was rebuilt in c 1864 to designs of W.J. Booth, though he was no longer company architect and had prepared designs much earlier. The terrace replaced an early one designed by Jesse Gibson (see ill.s 35 in Curl’s Moneymore and Draperstown p. 58, 59). The houses were probably built by Daniel Magee. House was probably sold by the Company in c 1891 under Lord Ashbourne’s Act. The property was listed in 1975 when it was in ownership of W.J. Ritchie. Evaluation

An interesting example of terrace house building of the mid Victorian era in Georgian style, carried out by the Drapers’ Company in the Post Famine period to improve the quality and character of Moneymore High Street. Unfortunately recent alterations have not helped the character and much former detail has been lost.
