Exterior Description And Setting

A dressed-granite weir across the river diverts water into a flow gauging station on the left bank. The weir is set between abutments of dressed granite blocks set in regular courses and has a metal plate across its cill. The gauging station is accessed by a flight of granite steps from the road. It is a one-storey/ one-bay structure with a flat concrete roof and cement-rendered walls embellished with stepped rusticated quoins and finely dressed door/ window surrounds.

Historical Information

Constructed as a flow measuring station by the Belfast Water Commissioners during the initial phase of the Mourne Scheme to supply Belfast with water. It probably pre-dates, by several years, the construction, around 1900, of the Annalong Weir immediately downstream (HB16/01/052), which diverted water into the Annalong – Belfast conduit and which was opened in 1901. It remains in use.

Evaluation

Primarily of historical interest on account of its association with the Mourne Scheme, it also has group value in its association with the nearby well house (HB16/01/051) and intercepting weir (HB16/01/052).
