Exterior Description And Setting

Located on east side of the main Belfast - Ballynahinch road, just north of St Andrew's Church, this utilitarian structure gives access to a valve in Mourne conduit which enables water to be drawn off to a small covered well a short distance west. It also equalises the pressure in the system and aerates the water passing through. Comprises a square-plan block of reinforced concrete throughout, with flat roof. Metal entrance door at north end of east wall. Opening with metal bars i this and opposite wall, and small ventilator in each of the remaining two walls.

Erected by Belfast City & District Water Commissioners in connection with the conduit which brought water from the Mournes to Belfast. Became operational in October 1901

Evaluation

Of historical interest in terms of its association with Belfast's first water supply from the Mournes. There are many structures of similar appearance along the pipeline, although most of these serve only as air wells.
