Exterior Description And Setting

A cow tailed closed head lever pump with a plain spirally decorated column and a fluted cap with an acorn finial. It is situated in a prominent location opposite a terrace of mill workers houses in a wall and railing alcove.

Historical Information

Not on the 1901 OS 25 inch map (PRONI Ref OS 10/3/9/10/1) but features on the 1919 and 1930 editions (/10/2, 10/3). Presumably installed between 1901 and 1919 (during which time the houses opposite were also erected) A local informant stated that the pump was erected by John Shaw Brown, the mill owner. Evaluation

A good example of a cow tailed water pump in its original prominent roadside setting opposite the mill workers housing that it served. Its value is increased by the alcove walling and railings.
