Exterior Description And Setting


Mid-late 19thC single storey/ three bay vernacular dwelling with front garden on N side of road. Main elevation faces S. Pitched corrugated metal roof with concrete skews and modern cement rendered and coped chimneys – one to either side of central bay. Original thatch roof and structure survives under later roof covering. Modern eaves board carrying half-round plastic rainwater goods. Walls are rendered and painted rubble stone. Wall head at rear has been built up in shuttered concrete and that to front is rendered as main wall. Centre bay has, at left, timber sheeted entrance door with iron cottage latch. Door frame rests on painted stone base blocks. To right of door on central bay is a single modern timber top-hung casement window set in an original opening with painted, irregularly-dressed stone cill. There are similar single windows to each remaining bay. Left and right gables are blank. Rear elevation has t+g sheeted painted timber door to central bay. Other bays are blank. Building is accessed by a lane from road and has a raised front garden. To rear (N) is a single storey / single bay rubble stone outhouse with pitched corrugated metal roof. To right (E) is a concrete block-work latrine with a corrugated metal roof.

This direct entry vernacular house and outbuilding, has retained its original plan form and structure, hearth and fireplaces. Its most important feature is its original thatch roof which survives below the present modern tin one.
