Exterior Description And Setting

A long, brown, metal clad shed built to the outside of the original western boundary walls ( the fortification becoming the eastern internal wall of the building). Segmental head to building which is about one and a half meters higher at the top than the fort wall. The building runs the length of the fortification between building 40 (HB01/09/002 U) and the central projecting bastion of the western wall of the fort. To riverside, walls are blank and are all sheeted in recently applied profiled metal replacing earlier corrugated metal which still remains in places. To the eastern side the much higher ground level results in a low boundary wall topped by the metal roof. 5 brick trimmed openings, 3 doors, 2 windows are irregularly spaced. Windows are eight pane timber casements, doors sheeted timber. One to south of the building is down short flight of 4 steps to gain head height.

Historical Information

Building not indicated on the 1904 Ordnance Survey Map and first indicated on the 1933 map. From the stair surviving inside it may have been constructed around the time of the First World War. Its exterior cladding was probably originally corrugated metal but this has been renewed in recent years. Due to its proximity to the river, it is likely that this building was closely involved in the activities of the base during World War II and subsequently as Sea Eagle. It is likely that these activities were similar to the workshop function of recent times. A long, brown, metal clad shed built to the outside of the original western boundary walls ( the fortification becoming the eastern internal wall of the building) of Ebrington Barracks . It is a small workshop building which detracts from the exterior character of the river walls of the barracks. It is however part of the history and functioning of the base during the twentieth century.
