Exterior Description And Setting

Ten bay, 2 storey white rendered building in the georgian style facing north to parade ground. Central door with 4 pane fanlight. 3 chimneys, one on each gable. One on third bay from the west. To east, a lean-to with blocked stone arch. Ground floor windows of sash proportion mostly blocked up with 3 No remaining (2 pvc – one glass block). Door at each end and central door with stone trim painted as render, and projecting only slightly in front. Pipes along façade at first floor. Link to new building in front at first floor on third bay from west. Gables blank with stone parapet returning at eaves. To rear, central return lower than eaves level. Timber-sheeted bridge extending from first floor, second bay from west. Terminates on line of former defensive wall and returns to west as an enclosed stair. Flat-roofed buildings of concrete brick and felt extend to the south, obscuring ground floor windows which appear to comply with the regular disposition at first floor. Line of old bastion returns and is demolished to road level (1metre high to building) and rendered in concrete along rear of building.

Historical Information

Part of the initial construction of the Barracks Complex and labelled on the 1854 map as ‘stores’. Main block of building remains as indicated on this map and larger scale 1874 survey. Enclosed courtyard to rear only accessed from the building as originally constructed. Smaller yard also to rear at western corner accessible from yard to west of building. Lean-to against this gable clearly indicated on 1874 map. Lean-to at the central section of the block indicated on the 1933 and 1955 maps though structure now removed and no trace appears to survive. Photograph from early part of twentieth century indicates a pitched slated roof with colonnade below. Courtyards to the rear largely unchanged on the 1955 map. Subsequently the new site HQ building was constructed to the front and various low-level flat-roofed extensions were constructed to the rear. The bastion wall of the fort remains as the concrete base for a steel palisade security fence to the rear (see HB01/09/002Z). Ten bay, 2 storey white rendered building in the georgian style facing north to parade ground. Part of the original group of buildings designed to surround the parade ground of Ebrington Barracks. An important part of the original composition, it is however much altered, and though it still contributes to the historical and architectural character of the site it is not considered to meet the legislative test of special interest required for statutory protection.
