Exterior Description And Setting

The remains of a closed head lever type pump made my Millfield Foundry, Belfast. The column and cap are plain save horizontal bands round the column. Handle missing. It has a removable inspection plate at side to base of the column. The makers name is inscribed around the top. The pump is now used for flower arrangements.

Shown on the 25 inch OS map of 1916 (PRONI Ref OS 10/3/20/12/1). As Millfield Foundry appears to have been established in 1907, the pump was probably installed between this and 1915. Further particulars in ther EHS Report 'Water Pumps in Northern Ireland : A Preliminary Survey' by Fred Hammond, January 1997, Pump No 39.

Evaluation

This water pump is situated close to the mill and mill workers terraced housing that it served. Unfortunately it is incomplete.
