Exterior Description And Setting

Description on 15.08.1995. A rotary type pump with a plain shaped undecorated column and plain cap. It is of an unusual design as the column comprises three bolted together sections with a flywheel at either side of the axle. Embossed around around the top of the column is the inscription 'H.J.Godwin Ltd/Ovenington/Glos/England'. It is situated in the school grounds (See HB17/12/025) and was used to pump water into a cistern in the school. Description on 07.07.2006. The pump has been relocated from the original school to a prominent oposition in front of the new school.

According to Mr Liggett, ex headmaster, it was probably installed when the school opened in 1939 and was used superseded by mains water in the 1950s or 1960s. Further particulars in the EHS Report 'Water Pumps in Northern Ireland : a Preliminary Survey' by Fred Hammond, January 1997, Pump no 66 07.07.2006 Pump was relocated in front of the new Ballydown School when new school was constructed.

Evaluation

Whilst a fine example of a rotary water pump it has been resited from its original position. The fact that it has been resited in a prominent position in front of the new school illustrates its importance to the school community.
