Exterior Description And Setting

Description at October 2006 : Building demolished. Description at July 2004 : A house built in two sections, the front part being single storey, the back part being two-storey with a valley between the roofs. Main entrance faces east. East elevation of front block is three-bay, with one window each side of a central entrance. Roof pitched, of Bangor blue slates in regular courses; two chimneys, one to each gable, smooth rendered with one red pot to each chimney. Moulded pvc gutter carried on pairs of small shaped timber brackets. Wall smooth cement rendered, lined, blocked, and painted, with raised quoins to extremities. Window openings are segmental headed with stilted drip mouldings on shaped corbels. Windows are segmental arched timber sliding sash, vertically hung, 2 over 2, with horns; projecting painted cills. Doorway opening is elliptically arched with drip moulding on shaped stops, containing a slightly recessed doorway comprising a timber panelled door, panelled pilasters, narrow sidelights with panelled aprons, surmounted by a plain elliptically arched fanlight with a dentilled archivolt; three moulded stone steps; modern metal light mounted over doorway. Extending to right-hand side and set back to rear of front block is the front elevation of the rear block: roof, walling, eaves corbels and guttering all as previous to entrance front; pvc downpipe; two windows, segmental headed, sashed 2 over 2 as previous but without drip moulding; left-hand window has concrete cill with what appears to be a doorstep below. South elevation is twin gabled: one chimney to each gable, as previous, with two pots to that of rear block; shaped timber gables; inner sloping roofs slated as previous; pvc downpipes; walling as previous to entrance front, with raised quoins to right-hand extremity. Gable of front block is single storey with one plain unmoulded segmental headed window opening containing a segmental arched sashed window as previous to entrance front but without drip moulding; gable of rear block is two-storey with two rectangular window openings to each floor, unmoulded, containing modern rectangular pvc windows, 1 over 1, fixed lights with top-hung vent. Rear elevation: roof slated as previous, with one metal flush rooflight containing re-used leaded glazing; pvc gutter and downpipes; walling is smooth cement rendered; windows are modern rectangular pvc, 1 over 1, fixed lights with top-hung vents, the two upper ones being contained in a small gablet which breaks the eaves line; modern glazed pvc door. Rear return – south elevation is of similar character and materials to rear elevation: one chimney on ridge of roof, smooth rendered, with one modern pot; one modern circular metal flue pipe; one modern flush rooflight; three modern pvc windows and one modern glazed pvc door. One rectangular timber fixed light, with glazing broken, and modern tiled cill. West elevation of rear return and attached outbuilding is of rubble stonework partly painted white; roof slated as previous but partly unslated; broken pvc guttering; pvc downpipe. North gable of outbuilding attached to rear return is of rubble stonework painted white; plain timber bargeboards; iron plated doors; timber slats to loft opening. East elevation of outbuilding attached to rear return is of rubble stonework painted white; roof unslated; modern metal windows. North elevation of rear return is of similar materials to south: three rectangular timber boarded doors; one modern rectangular pvc window; one modern timber window; one large segmental arched pair of double doors in boarded timber. North gable of front block: similar to south gable, with raised quoins to left-hand extremity, and a similarly sashed window in unmoulded opening; at base of wall is a painted perforated terracotta ventilator of late 19th to early 20th century type. North gable of rear block is plain smooth rendered, lined and blocked, with raised quoins to left-hand extremity. To the right the gable extends to a low single storey block in corner with rear return: lean-to slated roof; walls as main gable; pvc gutter; one modern rectangular window, fixed light with top-hung vent. The west side of this block has a similar window and a pvc downpipe. SETTING: The building stands in a rural area facing onto the roadway but set back slightly from it behind a front boundary wall and railings, and vehicular gateway, which comprise a modern plinth wall smooth rendered, lined, and blocked, with painted concrete copings, surmounted by two types of 19th century spear-headed cast iron railings set between square piers, with 19th century iron gates. Gateway leads to a tarmac driveway leading to an enclosed rear yard surfaced in tarmac. Rear yard to south is paved with quarry tiles although most now lifted. Similar quarry tiles to path along south side of main block of house, area surfaced with gravel. Front of house looks across road onto pastureland opposite with similar land to the south of the house; the land to the rear is currently being developed with modern red brick houses. Freestanding immediately to the north of the house are contemporary outbuildings of no special interest. The larger outbuilding, of rubble stone, has brick flat-arched and segmental arched openings containing replacement timber boarded doors and timber fixed light windows; roof unslated. The smaller outbuilding, of smooth cement render, has slated roof, modern boarded door, fixed light windows, and pvc rainwater goods.

Evaluation at October 2006 . Building demolished. Evaluation at July 2004 . This is a mid-Victorian building of fairly plain appearance to the sides and rear, with a somewhat more elaborate treatment to the entrance front, but although it appears to retain a number of its original exterior features it is not of special architectural merit or historic interest.
