Exterior Description And Setting

Three storey rendered commercial property on Kildare Street facing the Newry River. Roof is pitched and artificial slated with render chimneys to each gable (left one partially collapsed) and both gables are coped. Wall to façade is painted lined render to upper floors and banded rustication to ground floor. To ground floor is a shopfront, to its right is a door to upper floors. There are three banded rusticated piers, one to each side of elevation and one between shop and side door. These support a render fascia with dentilled cornice over. Inserted over the shopfront and below fascia is a projecting roller shutter and plastic sign. Shopfront consists of a modern timber door to centre flanked by two free standing cast iron columns with decorative heads. Rendered stall risers with panelled splayed side cheeks to central recessed doorway between columns. On either side of door is a three paned modern timber window each with a transom. The door to upper floors is modern timber with a plain transom. There are three equally spaced 1/1 sliding sash windows with horns to each upper floor. Those to first floor rest on the cornice of the shop front fascia; they have a continuous head mould over first floor windows. Heads have additional mouldings consisting of scrolls to the side and Baroque clam shells and arabesques. Second floor windows rest on a moulded cill course with two brackets below each window; each has a moulded architrave with decorative projecting keyblocks.

Historical Information

Shown on 1835 OS map and described as Robert Glenny’s house and stores valued at £40 in 1838 valuation. Glenny continues as owner in 1863 when building was recorded at three storeys high, “all used as stores”. The stucco work on the façade appears to be of later 19th century date, suggesting a refurbishment. Primary Sources: 1. OS map 1835 edition, PRONI- OS 9/15/1/1 2.
