The current building on this site is modern and replaces part of an early building surveyed in November 1969, and demolished around a decade ago. See also HB16/28/042B.

Historical Information

According to the Ordnance Survey Memoirs this building was erected as an assembly and public reading room in 1794; it also housed a savings bank. It is described in the 1838 valuation as “Savings bank, assembly rooms, and commissioners of police committee rooms.” Refurbished in 1871. What remainsed of original façade decoration may date from this time. It continued as a newsroom until about 1916, when converted to shops. An early 20th century photograph shows the façade at this time. The HMMB first survey card states “1794, two storey buildings, shopped on ground floor with stucco finish to upper floor, containing three venetian windows and one modern window; pilasters on panelled pedestals rise to entablature with triglyphs in frieze. Sequence of shop fronts is spoilt by enlargement of Scott & Scott premises. The roof is slated. 60’ frontage. It was built on a bleach green by subscribers, the first building in this part of street in 1794. Heads of insurgents of 1798 rebellion spiked above entrance after execution.” Records show G.W.Reside to be the architect. Primary Sources: 1.
