Exterior Description And Setting

Long, single storey vernacular dwelling of probable pre 1834 construction, with small lean-to porch to front and small modern extensions to rear. The property is set at the end of a lane to the S of Quintin Bay Road, c.3 miles SE of Portaferry. The front façade faces S and is asymmetrical. To the left of centre is a small lean-to (with a very shallow pitch) porch extension, with timber sheeted door to E face, fixed light window to S face, and a steel six pane window to W. To the left of the porch are two sash windows, to the right are three similar windows, widely spaced. Both E and W gables are blank, but that to east has water tank set on top of small block built store in middle of gable. Rear elevation has three windows similar to front, but with horizontal astragals, and two small flat roofed extensions with modern timber windows and a glazed door to the extension to the west. The façade is finished in rough cast and painted. Part of render at rear has broken away to reveal random rubble construction. The gabled roof is covered with asbestos slates. Stone parapets and four rendered chimney stacks with a single pot to the first and third stacks (from W). Eaves course, cast iron gutters and down spouts. Adjacent out buildings.

A building is shown on this site on the 1834 OS map and all other maps thereafter. It is probable that the house we see today corresponds to that of 1834. Unfortunately. the property was not recorded during the valuation of 1838.
