Exterior Description And Setting

Two storey gabled vernacular farmhouse of probable pre 1834 construction, now with modern garage door to front and dry dash finish. The house sits at the head of a long lane, S of Castlewellan Road, less than a mile NW of the small village of Clough. To the S front elevation is asymmetrical. To the left of centre is a modern flat panel front door. To the left of this are two small sash windows with horizontal astragals while to the right there is one similar window. To the far right there is an up and over garage door. This doorway may be original, once leading into an integral shed or byre, but this is not certain. To first floor there are five similar but shorter unevenly spaced windows. The E gable, which due to the ground rising is much shorter than the rest of the building, is blank. A retaining wall extends S from the SE corner and perched rather precariously on it is a large steel water tank. A rain water pipe from the rear elevation cuts diagonally across this façade. The W gable is blank. To the right of centre of the rear N façade is a flat panel door (as front). To the right are two very small window openings while to the left is one similar window. All openings have modern frames. To the far left an outbuilding projects northward. The roof is covered in natural slate and has a single pot chimney stack the W gable and a similar stack to the E side of the ridge. PVC RW goods. Dry dash render with smooth rendered base. The house has a series of rubble built gabled outbuilding grouped around it. That to the E now abuts the N side of that façade.

Historical Information

A house matching the dimensions of the present building is recorded in the valuation of c.1836, which, according to the valuers, was possibly over thirty years old at that point. Thus it is possible that this building could date from c.1800. The present owner indicated that his family had acquired the property in c.1900.
