Exterior Description And Setting

Site –to the south of Moyraverty West Road, just southwest of Craigavon- formerly occupied by a single-storey vernacular house of pre 1835 construction, demolished post 1978 with new dwelling now in place. The first survey report of August 1969 reads: ‘Single-storey cottage on [the] crown of [a] drumlin. Roof slated with sagged ridge. Walls roughcast and whitened. Faced across cobbled yard with rubble-walled outbuildings having corrugated-ron roofs. Condition fair to poor. About 75ft long’. A photograph of the front [either north or south facing] elevation of the property taken in October 1978, shows a long building made up of two unequal sections, each of which was probably once a dwelling in its own right (a theory supported by the historical information). The walls appear to have been rubble-constructed with the gabled roof of the larger section covered in corrugated-iron with that to the smaller section possibly slated. Both sections had projecting lean-to porches to front , that to the larger set to the right of centre with two windows to its left and two to the right, all with plain sash frames (presumably timber). There were two similar windows to the right of the smaller section’s porch, however the left hand side is obscured in the photograph. There were two brick chimneystacks to far east and war west, with the possibility of another to one of the gables (which is largely obscured from view)

Historical Information

A structure is shown on this site on the OS map of 1835, but not noted in the contemporary valuation. The second valuation of 1861 tells us that at that point the building contained two dwellings occupied by a Joshua and a Nathaniel Fitzsimmons, rated at £1-10-0 and £1-15-0 respectively. Nathaniel was succeeded as resident of the larger dwelling by William Fitzsimmons in 1888, with a Catherine Gibson following in 1896 and Joseph Fitzsimmons in 1909. In 1910 Joseph Fitzsimmons is recorded as the occupier and freeholder of both properties. He remained in residence until at least 1929. The building was demolished some time after 1978.
