Exterior Description And Setting

Site, on the north side of Carbet Road roughly two miles NW of Portadown, formerly occupied by a part single, part two-storey vernacular house of mainly pre 1835 construction, demolished post 1974. The first survey report of July 1974 reads: ‘Single and two-storey farmhouse. Roof slated, gable ends. Chimneys rendered. Walls rendered and whitewashed, brick base. Single-storey section on left hand [side] has 3 drop-hung [i.e. sash] windows, no astragals [but] narrow blue painted raised surround. Projecting porch [with] slated shed roof [and] sheeted door [with] plain narrow fanlight and decorative transom. Two-storey section on right hand [side] has on first floor a drop-hung window as before and two small sheeted window openings. Ground floor has a window as above and sheeted door below window opening above. Condition fair. South front about 65ft. Adjacent farm outbuildings’. Nothing remains of the house or any of the outbuildings save the vehicle gateway to the roadside, which has rendered pyramidal capped piers and wrought-iron gates.

Historical Information

A building is shown on this site on the OS map of 1835, but not noted in the (near) contemporary valuation. In the second valuation of 1861 the property is recorded as a thatched single-storey dwelling occupied by one Sarah Taylor, with a rateable value of £2-5-0. Sarah Taylor was followed by John Taylor in 1873 and in 1882 the valuation rises to £3-5-0, suggesting that it was at this point that the eastern section was raised a storey. John Taylor died c.1900 and in 1905 the lease was taken on by a William Parks, who added a new hayshed to the site the following year. Parks acquired the freehold of the property in 1910 and was still in residence when the first series of annual valuation records ceased in 1929. The building was demolished at some point after 1974.
