Exterior Description And Setting

Modern style open pavilion shelter of c.1950s, situated at the S end of the Central Promenade. The building is oblong in plan with a flat oversailing roof. It is constructed in reinforced concrete, (rough) rendered and painted, with a fluted string course just below roof level. A continuous cantilevered bench spans the entire façade. To the N is a large flat arch opening and to the S a long band of (timber framed) windows. It was noted that this buiding was demolished before listing was completed in 2005.

Historical Information

This shelter probably dates from the mid to late 1950s. Down District Council confirmed that all records prior to 1970 have been destroyed but Mr. Sampson, Chief Architect of DDC circa. 1960-70,stated that before his appointment Munce and Kennedy had carried out most of the Council's work. The firm of Munce and Kennedy became Consarc, but unfortunately they have no historic archive dating from that time.
