Exterior Description And Setting

Modest two storey late Georgian gabled house of c.1810-20, set on the SW side of King Street, on the slope of the Mournes to the S of Newcastle town centre. The front (NE) façade is symmetrical. To the centre at ground level is a four panel timber door with three pane high level sidelights and a segmental ‘radial’ fanlight. To the left of the doorway is a 6 over 6 Georgian glazed sash window. To the right of the doorway is a similar window. To the first floor are three similar, but slightly smaller windows. A low, rendered wall extends from both ends of this façade; this appears to have originally enclosed a small garden, but much of the front wall has been demolished. The SE gable is abutted by a later two storey house and is only exposed to its right hand side (which is blank). The NW gable has a 2 over 2 sash window with vertical glazing bars to the left on the first floor. To the rear there is a centrally positioned single storey lean-to with a plain timber sheeted door to the NW face and a modern window to the SW. To the left of the lean-to (on the main rear façade) is a small sash window, as gable. To the first floor are two similar windows, with a central modern window. To the right on the ground floor are a pair of French doors, which appear to have been inserted recently. The front façade is finished in lined render with chamfered in/out quoins. The exposed section of the SE gable is also finished in lined render. The NW gable and rear are in recently applied plain render. The roof is covered in natural slate. The lean-to roof appears to have artificial slate. Two modern rooflights. PVC rw goods. This house is presently undergoing renovation.

Historical Information

This house appears to be that shown on the OS map of 1834 and the (near) contemporary valuation plan of Newcastle. The accompanying valuation records tell us that the house at this stage belonged to one James Teer and was regarded by the valuers as B+/A-, that is a house which may have been c.20-30 years old and therefore possibly built in c.1810-20. James Teer was still in possession of the house at the time of the 1863 valuation, by which point the property had become known as ‘Bay View’ (and is marked as such on the 1859 OS map). By 1900 the property appears to have been in the hands of an R. Trimble, who is listed in contemporary directories as a plasterer. In 1999 the house was completely renovated. Modest two storey late Georgian gabled house of c.1810-20 whose façade is still largely intact. This house is one of a very few largely original pre 1830 dwellings in Newcastle.
