Exterior Description And Setting

A substantial single segmental span carries a two-lane road over the River Finn. Of very finely dressed random sandstone blocks. Voussoirs are of finely dressed vee-jointed sandstone blocks with rusticated keystones. Remainder of bridge is also of finely dressed random sandstone blocks laid to courses. Parapets are of larger blocks, with a string course along the inside face of their pitched copings. The parapets terminate in out-projecting vee-jointed piers with rusticated faces and shallow shouldered pyramidal caps. The middle block of each parapet is also slightly raised and has shallow pyramidal finished to its top face. The inside face of the downstream (SW) block bears an eroded inscription: "Wm McPhillips/ Builder/ 1868". Curved wing wall to left bank of upstream side. Two pipes are carried across the downstream face.

Historical Information

A road runs close to this location on both the 1834 or 1857 OS 6" maps. Datestone attests to the present bridge's construction in 1868.
