Exterior Description And Setting

Modern looking two storey house built around the fabric of a former single storey vernacular dwelling of probable pre 1834 origin. The property is set on the W side of Newcastle Road, c.2 miles N of the small village of Seaforde. The original house was described in the first survey of March 1978 as a ‘Single storey cottage. Roof slated, gable ends, chimneys rendered. Walls rough cast, painted white. NE front has 3 drop hung [sash] windows, Georgian panes. Sheeted entrance door between first and second windows. Condition poorish. Front about 50ft’. The present house bears absolutely no resemblance to its predecessor, being two storey and having large modern windows, modern doors etc., etc. The thickness of the ground floor walls suggests some of the fabric of the older building has been retained, but other than this nothing recognisable of the building remains.

Historical Information

A house is shown on this site on the OS map of 1834, which the valuation records of c.1836 tell us was then in the possession of one John Blackwood, and may have dated from the later 18th century (grade ‘B’). The house appears to have been still in the hands of the Blackwood family in 1860. When surveyed in 1978, the property appears to have contained a shop as well as living quarters. At some stage after this [?c.1985] the building appears to have been raised in height and radically different window openings inserted throughout.
