Exterior Description And Setting

A two-storey/ three-bay vernacular house aligned NE-SW, set back from the to the W of Derrygennedy Townland. Pitched natural slate roof with a rendered chimney between each bay. Advanced eaves board with exposed rafter tails supports half-round metal rainwater goods. Walls are wet-dashed random rubble. Principal elevation faces NW. To centre is a shallow segmental-headed opening containing a four-panelled timber entrance door with ¾-height sidelights with 1/1 fixed panes and stone cills. To either side bay is a 1/1 margin-paned sliding sash window with stone cill; all are as this unless otherwise stated. Aligned above to first floor are three windows, diminished in height. Left gable is abutted to centre by a single-storey addition (off no interest). To first floor centre is a window. Rear elevation has a t+g sheeted door set to right of centre bay, to its left is a window; above to first floor is a 2/2 sliding sash window. Right bay has a 2/2 metal-framed window. All windows are without cills. Right gable has a window to each floor.

Historical Information

Although buildings are shown hereabouts on both the 1834 and 1857 OS 6" maps, they appear to have a different alignment to the present house. The site's valuation changes from £3.10s.0d to £2.10s.0d in 1872, and there is no change thereafter. This may possibly indicate the erection of the present house, although such a low valuation is unlikely if this was the case; unfortunately the manuscript version of the second Valuation does not give the building’s dimensions. The house is shown in its present form on the 1907 OS map. Its present form probably dates from the early 1900s (although one cannot be absolutely certain). Primary sources: 1.
