Exterior Description And Setting


A single-storey/ single-bay L-shaped former schoolhouse aligned W-E on a lane to the S of Clonmaulin Townland. Pitched natural slate roof. There is a red brick chimney with concrete coping set on left gable. Overhanging eaves with exposed rafter tails. Half-round metal rainwater goods. Walls are wet-dashed over coursed rubble stone (dressed stone quoins are visible). Windows are the remains of 6/6 sliding sashes with tooled stone cills (unless otherwise stated). Principal elevation faces S. A large full-height entrance porch (detailed as main block) abuts left side. The ridge of the porch roof extends from front pitch of main block. S gable has a window (boarded over). Above is a stone tablet reading ‘Clinmaulin / National School / 1890’. Right cheek has a timber-sheeted door set at right. Left cheek is blank. To right of porch, on main block, are two windows. Left gable is blank. Rear elevation has a window to right and a timber-sheeted door to left. Right gable has a large window opening with stone lintel and brick dressing to set at a high level to centre. Above is a roundel infilled with perforated metal sheeting. Setting: To rear is a ruinous rubble stone outbuilding. Roof is gone and openings are no longer visible.
