Exterior Description And Setting

Largely overgrown remains of mid 19th century lime kilns and associated buildings. The grouping is set on the W side of Munie Road, less than half a mile SW of Glenarm. Only one kiln (to the N end) is still visible, everything to the S of it smothered in rampant greenery. The kiln itself is made of limestone rubble and is backing on to a hillside in the usual manner. To the E ‘front’ there is a large segmental arched opening with receding arches therein. To E of the kiln(s), backing on to the roadside, is the limestone rubble back and side walls of a mono-pitched roof house and outbuildings.

Historical Information

The quarry area in which the kilns are situated is shown on the OS map of 1832, with what appears to be only one kiln present. It is undoubtedly one of the ‘several quarries’ in the vicinity of Glenarm mentioned in the OS Memoirs of 1830. On the revised map of 1857 what appears to be a further kiln is indicated, as well as the house by the roadside. Three kilns appear to be indicated on the OS map of 1903. A lease dated July 1859 from the Earl of Antrim to a Daniel Hanna refers to lime kilns near Glenarm, but these appear to have been next to the quarry on the E side of the village. Largely overgrown remains of mid 19th century lime kilns and associated buildings. There appear to have been four lime kilns but rampant tree and shrub growth means that only one kiln can now be seen clearly.Not of architectural interest or suitable as a candidate for listing.
