Exterior Description And Setting

A single storey house with attics, with partly rendered and partly whitened rubble walls, roofs of concrete tiles, and a small projecting entrance porch. Described in the first survey in 1972 as "A harled and whitened thatched cottage with three deep sashed windows, vertically divided, and a panelled door with two pane fanlight." Walling to the entrance front is now rendered with a wet dash, on a projecting smooth rendered plinth; concrete tiles to roof with swept roofs to two modern dormers; two chimneys, rendered, with some brickwork revealed; PVC rainwater goods; main entrance in a later projecting porch with swept tiled roof; modern rectangular timber casement windows except for one original rectangular timber sliding sash window, 4 over 4 with horns. Right-hand gable is of whitened basalt fieldstones. Rear elevation is smooth cement rendered, with red brickwork in the gable of the rear return above a large rectangular opening; timber bargeboards. SETTING: The building stands in a rural area set well back from the public road and facing away from it, with an overgrown garden to its rear, next to the road, and a yard to its entrance front. Yard partly cobbled and one side lined by one and two-storey outbuildings of whitened basalt rubble, with slated and corrugated iron roofs. Approached by a driveway between old and new rubble stone piers.

Evaluation

This is an example of a vernacular cottage which was originally thatched but which has now lost many of its original features and all of its original character.
