Exterior Description And Setting

A mile stone prominently sited at Drumcru Cross Roads (on the corner of the roads to Crom and Wattle Bridge). A large limestone block, finely dressed to its two road faces and rounded to its top. It stands (at a slight angle) c.110cm high and is c.50cm square in cross-section. One face reads (in 5cm high capitals): 'CRUM CASTLE/ 2 MILES/ LISNASKEA/ 6 MILES'. The other reads: '[MONAGHAN?]/ [?] MILES/ CAVAN/ 10 MILES'.

Historical Information

The main road is cited as 'Mail Coach road to Dublin and Cavan' on the 1834 OS 6" map. It is not shown on any of the 1:10,560 maps (due to its small size). It was possibly erected by the Post Office in the early 1800s as a result of the upgrading of mailcoach roads (sanctioned by an Act of 1805). Primary Sources: 1.
