Exterior Description And Setting

A 19thC barn church set in a churchyard and aligned NE-SW to the N of Cloncallick Townland. Pitched natural slate roof with terracotta ridge crestings. There are two ridge ventilators; one to left of centre and one to NE gable. Overhanging eaves with exposed rafter tails support half-round metal rainwater goods. Walls are cement harled with stepped cement stucco quoins over a slightly advanced base course. Windows are lattice paned lancets set in cement rendered reveals with stone cills (unless otherwise stated). NE gable is blank and almost completely abutted by a large projecting gabled entrance porch (all detailed as church but without overhanging eaves). Porch gable contains a small Y-tracery lancet to either side. The left cheek contains a modern timber sheeted entrance door set in a cement-rendered reveal. Right cheek is blank. SE and NW elevations have three pairs of lancets. SW gable has a set of three lancets (that to centre is taller) set at centre. Setting: The church is set within a small churchyard containing mostly 19th and 20thC memorials, including a stone obelisk erected in memory of Alexander Bailey (d.1897).

Historical Information

A building is shown at this location on the 1834 OS 6" map. It is noted as a Presbyterian Meeting House in the first Valuation, but no further details are given. It is explicitly cited as a Presbyterian Meeting House on the 1857 map. It is probably the church noted in the 1835 Ordnance Survey Memoir as “to be built”. Primary sources: 1.
