Exterior Description And Setting

A one-and-a-half storey / two bay roadside vernacular house aligned N-S on the E side of the Cavan Road. Pitched natural slate roof with a central brick chimney. Overhanging eaves with exposed rafter tails support plastic rainwater goods. Walls are whitewashed lime-plastered over a tarred base course. Windows are uPVC top-hung casements with painted reveals and stone cills. Principal elevation faces W and is abutted to centre by a projecting entrance porch. It has a pitched artificial slate roof (rising to eaves level) with timber bargeboards and painted cement-rendered walls. Front face has a window to centre. Left cheek has a timber-sheeted door. Right cheek is blank. Left gable has a side-hung casement to apex. Rear elevation is blank. Right gable is abutted by a lower outbuilding (now incorporated into house). The exposed section has a window to apex. The outbuilding has cement-rendered walls to front (otherwise detailed as house) and a pitched corrugated metal roof. Front elevation has a timber top-hung casement to left and a t+g sheeted door to right. The exposed gable is blank. Rear had a large opening (to eaves level) set to left of centre. It has now been infilled and cement-rendered.

Historical Information

A small building is shown on the 1834 OS 6" map. A building similar in size to the present one is shown on the 1857 map. However, its valuation increases from 15s.0d to £3.10s.0d in 1880 and it is now described as a "house and forge". This suggests a rebuilt at this time. Evaluation

Despite a number of unsympathetic replacements, this lobby-entry vernacular dwelling and outbuilding retain a certain amount of character and forms a pleasant roadside feature.
