Exterior Description And Setting

A symmetrical two storey / three bay farmhouse aligned N-S on a lane to the E of Mullaghare Td. Pitched natural slate roof with two brick chimneys with decorative brick coping - one to party wall between each bay. Slightly overhanging eaves with exposed rafter tails support plastic rainwater goods. Timber bargeboards to gables. Walls are harled with contrasting stepped V-jointed stucco quoins and base course. Windows are uPVC top-hung casements mimicking sashes (6/6) with painted stone cills (unless otherwise stated). Principal elevation faces E. Central entrance consisting of a uPVC door with sidelights and semi-elliptical fanlight. To either side is a window. Aligned above ground floor openings are three windows. All openings have painted moulded architraves. Left gable is blank. Rear elevation is abutted by a lower return to left of centre (see later). All bays have a window to each floor. Those to left bay are timber top-hung casements; those to right and central bays are timber side-hung casements (that to ground floor centre is wider). The return rises to ¾ height and is detailed as house with a pitched artificial slate roof. There is a cement-rendered chimney to exposed gable. Gable is blank. Right cheek has a timber door to right and a side-hung casement window with concrete cill to left. Left cheek has a similarly detailed window (uPVC). Right gable has a large window (as before) set to left of centre at each floor. To right of that to ground floor is a small obscurely glazed timber top-hung casement window. Setting: The house has a maturely planted garden to front, accessed by a pair of cast-iron gates supported on square-in-section stop-end chamfered gate piers with a raised panel to each side and decorative moulded copings. To rear is a farmyard.

Historical Information

This house is first shown on the 1907 OS 6" map. A house valued at £6 is also cited in the second Valuation book of 1862. The fact that it is not on the 1857 OS map suggests an erection date around 1860. Its value increases to £8.10s.0d in 1911, indicating a major refurbishment and/or enlargement. Primary sources: 1.
