Exterior Description And Setting

Attached two-bay two-storey mid-terrace, built c.1840. located to the east side of Islandmagee Road. Rectangular-on-plan. Roof is pitched and natural slated; red brick chimneys with original clay pots to party walls. Walling is ruled-and-lined painted render. Windows are timber framed 2/2 sliding sash divided horizontally with margin lights; painted masonry sills. Principal elevation faces west and consists of vertically sheeted timber door with transom light to left; single window at ground floor right; two windows at first floor. North elevation abutted by HB22/05/004C. East elevation contains vertically sheeted timber door flanked to right by single 6/3 sliding sash window to right; single window to left; two windows at first floor (no margin lights). South elevation abutted by HB22/05/004A. Set within garden to west, with enclosed yard to east. Bounded to road to west by harled rubble walling supporting square gate pillars (repaired with brick), accessed through single timber gate. Roof: Pitched natural slate Walling: Ruled-and-lined painted render Windows: Timber framed 2/2 sliding sash divided horizontally with margin lights; painted masonry sills RWG: Cast-iron half-round gutters and round downpipes

Historical Information

A building first appears on the second edition Ordnance Survey map of 1857. Griffith’s Valuation of 1859 records a house valued at £1, occupied by Eliza Pinkerton, lessor William English. The Valuation Revisions of 1886 record the occupier as Mrs [Marshall?], revised in 1894 to Paul Carson. The lessor is revised to Gordon Butler in 1893. In 1886 two other houses appear listed below this entry, which are likely to correspond to the properties 133 and 135. Each building is valued at £1. A two-bay two-storey mid-terraced house, in a nineteenth-century terrace of three located to the east side of Islandmagee Road. The house is simply detailed and still retains many original features both externally and internally. The house, together with neighbouring dwellings, is located on a prominent site, contributing to a well-preserved group of architectural merit.
