Exterior Description And Setting

Remains of a single segmental span carrying the embanked former railway line between Clones and Newtownbutler over a one-and-a-half lane road. Only the abutments and approach walls now survive, the actual span having been removed above arch spring level. The abutments are of dressed sandstone blocks, randomly laid and with tooled edging. The quoins are stepped and rock faced. A finely dressed chamfered arch spring course runs across the top of each abutment. The wing walls are splayed backwards and are of random rubble, with dressed sandstone copings. They slope down to terminate in square piers, with dressed pyramidal caps.

Historical Information

This bridge is on the line between Clones and Lisbellaw which opened in 1858. It was probably built under the supervision of Sir John Macneill, engineer to the Dundalk & Enniskillen Railway Co. The D&ER became the Irish North Western Railway in 1862. In 1876 the INW amalgamated with the Ulster and Northern Railways to form the Great Northern Railway. The line closed in 1957.
