Exterior Description And Setting

A much altered symmetrical two storey / three bay house aligned SW-NE on the S side of the Crom Road. Pitched artificial slate roof with a pebble-dashed chimney to each gable. Advanced boxed eaves support plastic rainwater goods. Walls are pebble-dashed with painted dressed stone quoins over a painted cement-rendered base course. Windows are timber top-hung casements with narrow concrete cills. Principal elevation faces NW. Central bay has a modern timber door with a modern canopy consisting of a hipped roof supported on cast-concrete Ionic columns. Left and right bays each have a window to centre. Aligned above ground floor openings are three windows, all diminished in height. Left gable has a window to either side at ground floor. Rear elevation is abutted to left bay by a return which rises to ¾ height (see later). Exposed ground floor section has a small side-hung casement window to central bay. Right bay has a window as before. First floor has a window to each bay. That to central bay is taller than that to left bay. The return is detailed as house. SE face and left cheek each have a window to centre. Right cheek has a modern timber door. Right gable has a window to ground floor, set at right.

Historical Information

Although a building is shown at this location in the 1834 OS 6" map, the present house appears to date from c.1870. The Valuation revision book entry for this year notes an increase in the valuation of the building from 10s.0d to £10 (and to £11.15s.0d in 1874 - probably the addition of outbuildings; a gate lodge was also added at this time). It was then occupied by John Donegan. It is shown in its present form on the 1907 OS map. It appears to have been erected at the same time as HB 12-02-060, which was occupied by James Donegan and has a similar architecture form. According to a local person both houses were built by Dublin silversmith Patrick Donegan for his two sons. Primary sources: 1.
