Exterior Description And Setting

A two-storey farmhouse with small garden to the front, aligned E-W to the SE of Knockmackegan Td. Pitched natural slate roof with two brick chimneys- one between each bay. Half-round cast-iron rainwater goods. Walls are wet-dashed. Principal elevation faces S. To centre is a cement-rendered porch with flat roof. Front face has a t+g sheeted door with sidelights and transom over; left and right cheeks are blank. To either side of porch is a 2/2 sliding sash window (with horns) and painted stone cill. First floor has three similar windows, diminished in height, aligned above ground floor openings. Left gable is blank. Rear elevation is abutted to left and centre bays by a two-storey return, set flush with the east gable of the main block. The exposed right bay has a 2/2 sliding sash window to each floor. Return is detailed as main block with plain timber bargeboards and chimney set to left of centre and perpendicular to ridge. Its E elevation is abutted to right-end by a gabled porch (see later). To its left, each floor has a metal-framed casement window with concrete cill. Porch has a pitched natural slate roof, t+g sheeted door to S face and a top-hung timber casement window to east face; N face is blank. The end (N) gable of return is abutted by a single-storey outbuilding (see later). The west face of return has a window to each floor; a 2/2 sliding sash window to ground floor and a metal-framed window to first floor. It is abutted to extreme right-end by a single-storey addition (of no interest). The outbuilding abutting the N gable of return may have been an earlier house. It has a pitched corrugated-metal roof. From left on east elevation is a glazed timber door, a 6/3 and 6/6 sliding sash windows (both with exposed boxes), large corrugated-metal door, t+g sheeted door and small window opening. Right gable of main block has a 2/2 sliding sash window to each floor.

Historical Information

A building is first shown here on the 1857 OS 6" map. It valuation in the 1862 Valuation book is £1.10s.0d, and remains unchanged thereafter. Unfortunately the manuscript version of the second Valuation book does not give the building’s dimensions. This valuation is too low for the present two-storey building - it may relate to the rear return. The front section may be of early 20th century date, although one cannot be absolutely positive.
