Historical Information

This building is shown on the 1834 OS 6" map and subsequent editions. It is not valued in the 1835 Valuation, indicating a small vernacular building. It is valued at £3 in the 1862 Valuation. These data accord with the recent structure which was probably of earlier 19th century date. The First survey card of November 1983 describes the house as a “one storey thatched cottage with attic. Two low rendered crosswall chimneys. Thatch not carried over gables. Thatched from local reeds, scalloped at ridge. Stone walls, limewashed with tarred plinth; slight stone corbel at front. Modern windows with projecting stone cills. Semi-circular window with projecting stone cill over modern door.” In addition it state that “the original door was sheeted, with sidelights and cills (half-way up door height), and rectangular fanlight. Present owner does his own thatching from reeds from Lehinch Lough (opposite).” Primary sources: 1. OS 6" map, 1st edition (1834), Co Fermanagh sheet 39 (PRONI OS 6/4/39/1). 2.
