Exterior Description And Setting

A much altered two-storey/ three-bay house with rear return aligned roughly N-S along the E side of High Street. Hipped artificial slate roof with two brick chimneys set perpendicular to ridge, and between each bay. Overhanging eaves with modern bargeboards. Plastic rainwater goods. Walls are pebble-dashed over a smooth rendered and painted basecourse. Principal elevation faces W. Façade has been clad in artificial stone. Set to centre is a modern single-storey brick porch with pitched artificial slate roof and similar bargeboards. Left and right cheeks each have a circular fixed uPVC window. Entrance door is recessed behind a semicircular-headed opening with tiled threshold. Door is modern uPVC with sidelights. Window to each flanking bay on ground floor and identical windows aligned above, at first floor - all are uPVC casements with concrete cills. Left and right gables are blank. Rear elevation is abutted almost completely by a two-storey, similarly detailed return; the exposed right section is blank. The N face of the return is abutted by a single-storey addition with monopitched artificial slate roof (of no interest); above to first floor are two windows. Its rear gable has a window to ground floor right. It S face has a window to ground floor right and two first floor windows. Front of site is enclosed by a modern balustraded wall with ball-topped gate piers – all of no interest.

Historical Information

This building is not shown on the 1834 Valuation town map. It is cited in the 1857 OS 6" map as a Police Barracks, and as a Constabulary Barracks on the 1907 edition. It is described in the 1860 manuscript Valuation as measuring 33ft x 18ft x 2 storeys, with a 6ft square 1-storey porch, and 18ft x 21ft x 2 storey return.
