Exterior Description And Setting

A much altered two-storey/ three-bay house, aligned roughly N-S along W side of High Street and set below level of footpath. Pitched artificial slate roof with single brick chimney to left gable; that between centre and right bay is now gone. Advanced eaves course carries plastic rainwater goods. Principal elevation faces E. Walls are pebble-dashed over a smooth rendered and painted basecourse with cement rendered banded quoins. Set to right of centre is a modern uPVC entrance door. To either side, and also aligned above all ground floor openings, is a window – all are modern uPVC top-hung casements with painted concrete cills and cement rendered reveals. Left gable has two windows to each floor – that to ground floor left is smaller and set within a former door opening. Rear elevation is abutted to ground floor right by a single-storey garage (of no interest) obstructing the view of the exposed ground floor section. First floor has a window to first floor left and centre bays. Right gable is completely abutted by adjoining building.

Historical Information

A building is cited at this location in the 1836 Valuation book and shown on the Valuation map of the same date. It then belonged to Francis Adams Reilly and is described as a house measuring 35ft6in x 23ft6in x 17ft. According to the 1860 Valuation book, it still belonged to Mr Adams and its dimensions are virtually identical (36ft x 24ft x 2 storeys). The existing house probably dates from the earlier 19th century. The first survey slide dated September 1972 shows the building to have an additional cement rendered chimney set between centre and right bays. Walls are lined-rendered with stepped V-jointed quoins. All windows are 1/1 exposed box sliding sashes with horns. Entrance door is glazed timber with a similar door to gable. Primary sources: 1.
