Exterior Description And Setting

Site, in the middle of the terrace on the N side of Bridge Street, of a former two storey house, demolished c.1988 with a much larger modern building now occupying the site. The house was described in the first survey of November 1970 as: ‘Two storey house adjoining No.34. Roof slated. Chimneys rendered, walls dark brown sandstone in courses with filled joints. Two first floor drop hung windows, Georgian panes, shouldered cement surround. One ground floor drop hung window- horizontal astragals. Doorway below right hand window has stone surround with cornice moulding above lintel. Decorated horizontal fanlight above sheeted door. Front about 16ft. Condition fair’.

Historical Information

There appears to be a building shown on this site on the 1722 map of Comber. The general appearance and sandstone façade suggest that the house on this site until recently was built c.1830, a suggestion supported by the valuation records of 1834 which note three newly built houses at this end of Bridge Street, all of which match its dimensions. This particular property was probably that noted in possession of a ‘Miss Carlile’, which had a rateable value of £4 10s. The house (and its neighbour to the west) were demolished c.1988, with a much larger modern sheltered housing complex taking in the site and much ground to the west and north.
