Exterior Description And Setting

Picturesque, two storey gabled gamekeeper’s lodge of 1875 in basalt rubble with painted dressings and a small gabled porch. The house is sited on the far W of Glenarm Demesne, just to the E of Munie Road. The front (E) elevation is symmetrical. To the centre of the ground floor is the partially glazed panelled front door centred within the gable of a small porch with overhanging slated roof with decorative pierced bargeboards. The doorway has painted stone in-out dressings with keystone inscribed with the date 1875. To each of the N and S faces of the porch there is a narrow two-pane window with dressings as before. To either side of the porch (to main house) is a sash window with Georgian panes (6/6) and dressings as before. To the first floor there are three similar windows. The S gable has one window to ground floor and one to the first floor, both as front, with a small centre pivot window to attic level. To the ground floor right of the N gable is a window as front but 6/3. To the first floor right is a window as front. Attic window as S gable. To the left side of the rear W elevation is a partly glazed door. To the right is a window, as front with two more to right on first floor. To the right side of the first floor are two sash windows, as before. The entire façade is in basalt rubble with painted stone quoins and dressings. All openings have a shallow stone relieving arch over. The gabled roof is slated and has an overhang with decorative pierced barges. Two central rendered chimneystacks. Cast iron rw goods. Outside toilet to N. Kennels to S.

Historical Information

This house was built as a lodge for the Antrim estate gamekeeper in 1875. Prior to this (according to the valuation records of 1833 and 1859) the gamekeeper lived in ‘The Cottage’, a picturesque dwelling set on a rise roughly two miles to the south, within the Great Deer Park (on the site of the present 1920s ‘Lord Antrim’s Cottage’).
