Exterior Description And Setting

Completely modernised one and a half storey farm house set at the end of a long lane to the E of the Killinchy Road, c.2 miles S of Comber. This dwelling is based around the shell of a house of possible pre 1834 origin, but apart from sections of the fabric of the walls, nothing survives of the original. The front façade faces NE. In the centre is a gabled porch with a panelled and spoked fanlight. The outer faces of the porch has a narrow four pane window. To either side of the porch are two large windows with modern frames. In the centre of the rear façade is a large single storey return with various modern windows, two to the gable and one to the NE side. To the right of the return (on the main rear façade) is a modern glazed door, to the left is a large modern window. The SE gable has two modern first floor windows and a small modern window to the left on the ground floor. The NW gable is blank. The entire façade is finished in rough cast and painted. The gabled roof is steeply pitched and covered with pan tiles. To the front are three mono-pitched dormers (which meet the eaves) with large modern windows to front and timber sheeted sides.. Two similar dormers to the rear. Two rendered chimney stacks. PVC rw goods.

Historical Information

Though the present house is entirely modern looking, it is based around the walls of a dwelling shown on the OS maps of 1834 and 1858. Unfortunately little appears to be known of the history of the building as it was of insufficient value to be noted at the time of the 1833 valuation and the map to accompany the second (1863) valuation is missing. The present owner bought the property in 1975, after it had lain derelict for some years, and completely remodelled it. When first surveyed in December 1973 this house had a largely symmetrical front façade with an (almost central) glazed porch covering an ‘Ards’ doorway. The windows had Georgian paned sash frames and there was a small gabled half dormer. The roof pitch was slightly shallower than at present.
