Exterior Description And Setting

Ruinous windmill stump in the middle of a field to the S of the Ballygraffan Road, c.1.5 miles SE of Comber town centre. The stump is in random rubble and stands c.6m high by 3.5m in diameter with walls of roughly a metre thick. It is slightly battered. To the N much of the stump has collapsed and to the S there is a small doorway with a tiny window above.

Historical Information

This former windmill is shown on James Williamson’s map of 1810 and on the OS map of 1834. However it is not noted in the first valuation of 1833 and on the OS map of 1858 it is marked as a ‘windmill stump’, suggesting it had been abandoned by that stage.
