Exterior Description And Setting

Single storey linear vernacular house, set gable end on to the W side of the Killinchy Road, less than a mile S of Comber. The front (S) facade has a right of centre partly glazed door. To the left of this is a sash window with horizontal glazing bars. To the right are two further windows one sash and the other with a modern frame. To the far left on this facade there is evidence of a window and another doorway having been blocked up with breeze blocks. The E gable is blank. To the W gable an upper level window was been blocked up as before. To the rear there is a partly glazed door roughly in the centre. To the left of this are two sash windows with another to the right of the door. To the far right is a large opening with timber sheeted double doors. The facade is mainly covered in rough cast which has been whitewashed as some point but which is now quite dirty with render having come off in sections to the gable (revealing basalt rubble construction). The roof is gabled and covered in a natural slate with a small Velux window to the front and one to the rear. Single rendered chimney stack (to E on ridge). Plain barge boards. PVC rw goods. Gate posts to rear of house with wrought iron gates which appear fairly old looking.

Historical Information

A building is shown on this site on the 1834 and 1858 OS maps. The current resident, recalling an incised date he once saw on one of the walls, believes that the house may date from 1817. The property was under rateable value at the time of the first valuation survey, and due to the apparent disappearance of the map to accompany the second (1863) survey, it is difficult to say who owned the house at this stage either. Simple single storey vernacular dwelling of probable pre 1833 origin (perhaps built in 1817). Some former window openings and a doorway have been crudely blocked up and there is a large store opening to the rear.
