Exterior Description And Setting

War memorial dating from c.1922-23, situated near the NW corner of the pedestrianised area in the centre of The Square. The memorial consists of a stepped granite base, square in plan but with bevelled corners. On top of the base is a square plan pedestal also in granite with bronze panels set in recesses on each side with the names of the local-born who fell in the Great War and subsequent conflicts. This pedestal also has bevelled edges and a bevelled top with stylised laurel leaf carving. The pedestal supports a life size bronze statue of a soldier in battle dress of 1914-18. The statue is inscribed at its base ‘L.S. Merrifield. Sc. 1922.’.

Historical Information

This war memorial was erected c.1922-23 as a monument those from the Comber district who lost their lives in The Great War. The bronze panels also carry the names of those fallen in subsequent conflicts, including of course W.W.II.
