Exterior Description And Setting


Site (to the W of the Ballydorn Road c.1 mile NE of Killinchy) of a former single storey house now demolished. This site is now taken up with what appear to be the foundations of an intended dwelling, however, work on this dwelling appears to have been abandoned. First Survey Record: Long single storey cottage. Roof thatched, gable ends. Chimneys rendered. Walls roughcast and cream painted. South East front has sheeted double door; double hung window, horizontal astragals - one pane dead window; recent timber glazed porch with flat roof. Double hung window, horizontal astragals. Off shoot at back has asbestoswalls and roof. Condition poorish. Back thatching not completed. About 65 feet long.'

A building is shown on this site on the OS maps of 1834 and 1859-60. The valuation records of c.1835 note that this dwelling was in possession of a William McKeown and that attached to it was a ‘carhouse, barn and potato house’ all of which along with some land in the area had the rateable value of £7-1-0. By the time of the second valuation (c.1861) the dwelling, outbuildings and land had been leased to an Alexander Hamilton, by one James Ferguson, with the rateable value of the buildings at £1-5-0 and the land at £12.
