Exterior Description And Setting

Ruined stump of a former windmill c.4.5m in diameter (inc. Walls of c.0.75m thickness) and c.3.5m in height. The stump is constructed in random rubble and is roofless. There is a doorway opening to the W ‘side’. The windmill is set on a rise to the E of the Comber Road, less than 1 mile N of the hamlet of Balloo.

Historical Information

This windmill is shown on the 1834 OS map, though it does not appear to be noted in the contemporary valuation records. On the OS map of 1859-60 it is marked flax mill and mentioned in the second valuation of c.1861 as being in the possession of one Thomas Bell. A cottage just to the south of the stump has a millstone in its front garden, perhaps indicating that this mill may originally have ground corn.
