Exterior Description And Setting

A three-storey gabled building, four windows wide, with slated roofs and rendered walls. Main entrance faces west. Entrance elevation: roof of Bangor blue slates in regular courses; three chimneys, red and yellow polychrome brick, with stub pots; cast iron rainwater goods. Walling is smooth cement rendered, lined and blocked, with a plain plinth, quoins to extremities, and a projecting moulded string course which steps over each first floor window to form a continuous series of label mouldings. Windows are rectangular timber sliding sash, 2 over 2 with horns, with margin lights, with exposed frames, set in plain reveals with projecting cills, except for the extreme right-hand window on ground floor which is larger, consisting of a triplet of similar windows. Doorways contain rectangular timber sheeted doors. Shop sign mounted on wall above doorways, rectangular timber with moulded frame. Three ornamental lamp brackets mounted on wall at 1st floor level, between windows. Extending to the right is a lower flat-roofed single storey wing, of similar rendered walling as previous, with one rectangular window, a triplet of sashes as previous to main block. North gable, above adjoining building is rendered with a fine dashed finish. South gable is rendered as previous to entrance front, including quoins; one window to 2nd floor, sashed as previous. Shop signs crudely mounted on wall. Rear elevation: original rear wall mostly obscured by later rear extensions and difficult to see; roof of original block slated as previous to entrance front; PVC rainwater goods; walls smooth rendered. SETTING: The building stands within the built-up area of the village, facing on to Bridge Street, with an adjoining building to one side and a gateway to the other; terrace houses overlook it from the other side of the street.
