Exterior Description And Setting

Small single storey gabled, formerly vernacular house of probable pre 1834 origin, completely modernised / extended in recent years and now sporting a concrete tile roof, dry dash render, modern window frames etc. The property is situated on a slight rise to the S side of Stockbridge Road, c.1.5 miles NW of Donaghadee. The front façade faces W and is asymmetrical (the building has been extended southwards). To the left of centre is a small modern flat roofed porch. To the far left is a window, with another three windows to right of the porch. Both gables are blank. To the left at the rear there is a large projecting gabled bay (too shallow to be called a ‘return’) with a window to the gable and to the short N face. To the right of this (to main house) are three windows of varying size. All windows have modern frames. The façade is finished in a ‘salt & pepper’ dry dash with concrete tiles to the gabled roof. There is a single brick chimney stack to S of centre. PVC rw goods.

Historical Information

A building, roughly matching the plan of the present house before the recent extension, is shown on the OS map of 1834. When the property was first surveyed in February 1973 it possessed a thoroughly vernacular appearance with thatched roof, white-washed rough cast façade and a single Georgian paned sash window and door to front- all of which suggests that it was likely to have been the same building shown on the 1834 map. The house is not recorded in the valuation of c.1836, but is noted in that of c.1861-3, when it was home to a John Summers (who leased it from a William Burns). The building was extended and ‘modernised’ c.1980s.
