Exterior Description And Setting

A 3 bay 2 storey gabled house with back return. The elevation to Bayview Road has central shallow lean-to roof projecting porch with entrance door in side wall and large picture window on front wall. To each side a wide window subdivided into 4 panes with small top hung vents. Over 3 double hung sliding sash 4 pane windows. Slight eaves overhang with ½ round gutter and single downpipe. Walls roughcast rendered with smooth plastered plinth, rusticated quoins and band under gutter. The north gable is windowless, while the other has a single double hung sliding sash 4 pane window at 1st floor wall off-centre towards rear and a ground floor side porch. The barge overhangs on each gable are pronounced fixed to projecting purlins and finished at bottom with a large circle in the centre of which is cut a 5 pointed star with shamrocks around it. The same detail appears on No. 3 Bayview Road. The back return is 1 bay long and 1½ storeys with tall chimney stack on gable and a number of double hung sliding sash windows. The house is setback from the footwalk on higher ground with garden to front and walled yard to rear and abuts North Street. The house enjoys a fine view of the harbour, marina and Rathlin Island.

House probably built c 1900 by a builder named Humphries who built it for his daughter. He obviously built several of the adjacent houses too.

Evaluation

A simple 3 bay wide 2 storey house of c1900 well maintained and with its white painted roughcast blends in well with the harbour scene. It is not however considered to be a structure of special architectural or historic interest.
